Pumpkin Snickerdoodles
recipe slightly adapted from Sweet Pea's Kitchen who was inspired by Recipe Girl, barley adapted from Cook’s Illustrated
Makes approximately 4 dozen
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 3/4 cups sugar, divided
2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg
3/4 cup pumpkin puree
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, salt and pumpkin pie spice; set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar at medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula as needed. Add the egg and beat at medium speed until combined, about 30 seconds. Add the pumpkin puree and beat at medium speed until combined, about 30 seconds. Add the dry ingredients and beat at low speed until just combined, about 30 seconds, scraping down the bowl as needed.
Place the remaining 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon for rolling in a shallow bowl. Roll a heaping tablespoon of dough into a 1½-inch ball, roll the ball in the sugar mixture, and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough, spacing the balls about 2 inches apart
Bake the cookies 10 to 12 minutes, rotating the baking sheet halfway through baking. Cool the cookies on the baking sheets about 5 minutes.
Edible Gluten Free Playdough
Baby rice cereal
Vegetable Oil
Cornstarch (or gluten-free cornflour if you are in the UK or Australia)
Unsweetened Applesauce (you can substitute water if you don't have applesauce)
Food coloring (optional)
In a bowl combine 1 cup of Baby Rice Cereal and 1 cup of Cornstarch. Mix well. Add 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce (for reference those little lunch sized applesauces happen to be 4 oz = 1/2 cup) and 3 Tablespoons of vegetable oil and any food coloring (if desired). Mix well. I find that kneading by hand is pretty effective, though you could also use a Kitchenaid. The dough should be kneaded (or mixed) until it is smooth and pliable. If it is at all sticky, slowly add more Baby Rice Cereal taking care to knead it completely in before deciding you need more. If the dough is dry and cracking, run your hands under the faucet and knead the dough with your now wet hands.

Lemon Scented Playdough
Ingredients:
1 cup flour - 1/4 cup salt
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil - 1 pkg lemon Kool Aid or few drops lemon essential oil
- yellow food coloring (optional)
3/4 cup boiling water - Place everything in your mixer and mix until desired consistency.
Edible Peanut Butter Play Dough Recipe:
- 1 cup powdered milk (dry)
1/3 to 1/2 cup peanut butter (crunchy for added texture or smooth)
1 teaspoon honey
Edit to add: I’ve seen recipes that are the same as the above but use powdered sugar/ icing sugar instead. Try those if you have no powdered milk!
Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and add more powdered milk if the dough remains too sticky to touch. Then simply roll it out, cut shapes and play! The lovely thing about this recipe is that it is completely edible so safe for little ones who are still at the tasting stage.
