Activities to Encourage Pre-writing
1. Show your child how to draw letters and words in the sand when you go to the beach. See who can find the most creative writing tool. A stick, seashell, rock, leaf, etc.
2. Mix up a batch of bread dough together and form it into letter shapes. Young children are especially excited about letters in their own names and words they relate closely too. (mom, dad, brother and sister names, pet names, favorite storybook characters, etc.) When you're finished forming the dough bake them into letter bread sticks and cook up some spaghetti for supper.
3. Use chalk to draw large letters or numbers on a concrete surface or use masking tape on the living room floor. Have your child walk, skip, hop, or crawl around the letter or number shapes.
4. Rinse out a plastic squirt bottle (Ketchup, mustard, or dish soap bottles work well.) and fill it with water. Have your child make designs or letters on the cement patio, sidewalk, wooden deck, or vacant parking lot. Let them watch as their designs disappear.
5. Gather some paper, writing utensils, a stapler, or a hole punch and thread. Use the materials to make a book and help your child write his/her own story. Have them illustrate their book and tell you what to write on each page. Encourage them to write their own words on the page as well. Then share the book with someone special.
6. Keep items such as: paper, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, and safety scissors available for your child to use. Always consider safety and the age of your child when choosing materials to leave out, but this will do wonders for igniting your child's curiosity and excitement for writing.
